What advice do you have for a white belt that you wish you got or learned the hard way?
I had good coaches from the jump and I did my best to follow their advice. I think both Jay Jack and Travis Stevens have been good leaders and I'm grateful for them.
My advice is to white belts is simple: find a school you like and a coach you trust .. then practice what they show you. For me, it's about teaching white belts a well-rounded game so they know a system from each position. As you progress through blue belt, I think that you should be able to flow through positions and submissions with some fluidity and ease. You can start to specialize as a purple belt.
We all have natural inclinations. I'm long and lanky with big feet. Butterfly guard just comes naturally. You'll all find your thing in time!
I would give all basic stuff, ask questions, technique over speed, understand the why, wash your gi, cut your nails, take notes, tap early, etc. Initially, I wouldn't get lost in watching a bunch of social media videos as they will over saturate you with information. However I'll recommend watching Crystal's YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/c/REALIZELIFECHANNEL The first class section is a great place to start. There's a ton of useful information for you entire BJJ journey. Find a friend(s)/ training partner(s) and drill the classes.
